Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young sire Buffalo Bill Cody made headlines on Saturday when his son Pistol Pete landed the G3 Betway Lebelo Sprint (1000m) at Turffontein.
Winner of the Listed HKJC World Pool Event 6 April Storm Bird Stakes last season, the speedy three-year-old picked up his biggest win with his Lebelo Sprint score.
Under Kabelo Matsunyane, the Tony Peter-trained colt raced just off the pace early on. Pistol Pete hit the front 350m from home and kept going gamely to win by a short-head.
It was a fine win from Pistol Pete, runner-up in the G3 New Turf Carriers Merchants last time out, with the colt not enjoying the sticky conditions.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Pistol Pete took his tally of wins to five, from ten starts, with the colt earning R673,625.
Pistol Pete, who is out of the Tiger Ridge mare Oklahoma Sky, was a R380 000 buy from the 2023 Cape Yearling Sale.
His sire Buffalo Bill Cody has made a cracking start with his small first crop. This crop includes Pistol Pete and Model Man Mile winner Artist’s Model and G3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes runner up Wolf Mountain.
From his first 14 runners, eight of Buffalo Bill Cody’s first crop have won and there is sure to be plenty more to come.
