Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young sire Fire Away was the toast of Turffontein racecourse on Saturday afternoon.Fire Away sons Confederate and Fire Attack finished first and second respectively in Saturday’s G1 TAB SA Classic (1800m), the second leg of the TAB sponsored Triple Crown. In the process, Confederate became his sire’s first G1 winner.
Trained by Fabian Habib, the gelded three-year-old was given a masterful ride by Craig Zackey in Saturday’s R1 500 000 contest.
Zackey wasted no time in taking Confederate to the front, and the pair went out to make the running. Confederate kept galloping strongly in front, and the bay found more in the closing stages to score by nearly three-parts of a length.
Bred by Moutonshoek, the progressive Confederate has won four of eight starts, with Saturday’s victory pushing his earnings to R1 251625.
Confederate, who is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Acquavella, was a R280 000 buy from the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale. He is the seventh stakes winner to have emerged from the first two crops of his sire Fire Away.
The latter, also responsible for impressive Listed Ibhayi Stakes winner My Best Shot, also looks to have some promising two-year-olds this season, including Military Command, an eye catching recent winner at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
By the same sire as the much missed Lancaster Bomber, Fire Away has ten lots on offer at the National Yearling Sale, including a full-brother (Lot 33) to SA Classic runner up Fire Attack.
