Fire Away colt lands Champions Challenge


Wilgerbosdrift’s top-class young sire Fire Away has enjoyed a purple patch this season. Fire Away came up with his second G1 winner in less than a month when his three-year-old son Fire Attack won the G1 HKJC World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge (2000m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

Trained by Alec Laird, Fire Attack had finished second in three starts prior to Saturday’s victory and came into the Champions Challenge off a runner-up finish, behind fellow Fire Away son Confederate in the G1 TAB SA Classic.

Under Richard Fourie, the chestnut was dropped out early on before moving up to sit just off the pace.
Fire Attack loomed up close home before digging down deep to best 2024 G1 World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge winner Royal Victory by a neck.

His red hot sire Fire Away is not only responsible for both Fire Attack and Confederate, but also this season’s Listed Ibhayi Stakes/Listed Bryanston Auctioneers East Cape Guineas winner My Best Shot and Cape Racing Sales Cape Slipper hero Military Command.
The inform Fire Away went close to having a feature race double on Saturday with his classy daughter Explosive Bond finishing a close second in the Listed 4Racing Caradoc Gold Cup.
